Welcome back to Scotch and Watch, an unscripted, and authentic deep dive into how the media and tech industries can work together to get to a better future, faster.
This week we are joined by one of my personal inspirations and mentors, Bismarck Lepe, from his home in Mexico.
From humble beginnings, he became one of Google’s earliest employees, writing the first lines of code of its ad business which now banks $350 billion.
He then started Ooyala to help publishers embed video, before employing thousands of engineers in Wizeline, and now leads fast-growing telehealth platform MiSalud.
His proven approach to entrepreneurship is now sought out by publishers around the world, as well as leaders at many of the world’s most valuable companies.
Chris and I were keen to know what publishers could learn from him about:
When to say go or woah on innovation.
How to best incubate internal start-ups.
When to think big and when to bide your time.
What to focus on first to get wins over the line, and
Ways to empower employees to chase their passions.
It’s an amazing and inspiring can’t miss chat, just as the news industry ponders whether to take big swings on AI, and with Big Tech break-ups on the way…
Bis and I have been friends for 20 years, so with me in Sydney drinking coffee, Chris nursing a 12-year-old Bowmore in London, and Bis sipping mezcal in Mexico, we got underway...
